Funding amount in Utrecht Region
As in previous years, most funding activity was concentrated in companies headquartered in the municipality of Utrecht, confirming the city as the region’s main hub for startup financing. At the same time, investments became more broadly spread across sectors, with funding rounds taking place in 20 industries, up from 15 in 2024 and 19 in 2023. Health and enterprise software remained the leading sectors, while energy also emerged as a key area, reflecting the region’s strong focus on digital technology, health and sustainability.

Funding rounds in Utrecht Region
Behind the 69 funding rounds in the Utrecht region in 2025 was a broad network of 130 unique investors, showing that the ecosystem is not dependent on only a small group of financiers. ROM Utrecht Region was by far the most active investor, participating in 29 rounds, while a wider group of national and international investors joined multiple or individual deals. Co-investment played an important role, with investors from the Netherlands and abroad contributing not only capital, but also expertise, networks and access to follow-on funding.

By the end of 2025, the number of startups in the Utrecht region had grown by 12.8%, outperforming the national growth rate of 9.3% and placing Utrecht among the fastest-growing startup regions in the Netherlands. The region maintained its strong national position, ranking third in startups per 100,000 inhabitants and fourth in total number of startups, while increasing its share of the Dutch startup base to 12%.

Growth in Utrecht Region
The Utrecht region counted 45 scaleups in 2025, up from 41 in the previous year, representing growth of almost 10%. This means the number of scaleups is increasing at roughly the same pace as the overall startup population in the region. With 30 of the 45 scaleups located in the city of Utrecht, the city clearly remains the central engine of the regional startup and scaleup ecosystem.
95 female founded startups
Female Founders in Utrecht Region
In 2025, Utrecht Region counted 95 startups with at least one female founder, slightly up from 89 in the previous year and representing around 8% of the Dutch total. Female-founded startups are mainly concentrated in the municipality of Utrecht, which accounts for 64% of the regional total, and are especially active in health and enterprise software. Within the region’s innovation ecosystems, Life Sciences & Health stands out for having the highest relative share of female-founded startups.
